What is Narrative Writing? The writer tells about a personal experience. The writer tells a story or describes an incident. Narrative writing can be fictional, not true, or based on real experiences.

What does a Narrative Essay do? Reveals the writers feelings about a topic Includes detail about the setting, characters, actions, and conflicts Teaches a moral Expresses an opinion or thought Entertains

How is a Narrative Essay written? Uses first person point of view Presents events in sequential order Reveals important details Appeals to the reader’s senses and feelings

How is a Narrative Essay formatted? Begin with an introductory statement or lead sentence Establish a topic or main idea Support the topic or main idea, using detail End with a conclusion to sum up the topic or main idea

What is a lead sentence? Introduces the story Gives a hint about the main idea or topic Suggests how the writer may feel about a topic Gets the reader hooked or interested

What is the topic or main idea? Point in telling the story Like a thesis statement Key element the reader is to understand

How does one support the topic? Tell of the events in sequential order * Using sensory details * Appealing to the reader’s emotions * Using figurative and descriptive language * Referring to characters, a setting, conflicts, etc. Maintain focus and relevance to the main idea or topic

What does a conclusion do? Tells of the last events Finalizes the writer’s thoughts or feelings Sums up the main idea or topic
