1 Home Economics and Food Nutrition Lesson objective – to understand the relationship between quality of diet and disposable income Success criteria: Build- to enter into a discussion about people’s income and how this can affect their choices when buying and making meals at home. Apply – to plan, prepare and cook an economical dish that would be suitable for an evening meal for a low income family with two children. Apply - Work out the cost per portion of the dish Secure – You have planned your menu using the above criteria and have documented the cost in a professional way listing all the factors that affect the cost of the ingredients and the health implications of your chosen recipes.

2 Questions 1.What is meant by disposable income? 2.How can family size and spending patterns affect the type of food we eat? 3.What type of food outlets would prove to be a better choice for shopping if you have a big family? 4.Where would you expect couples and single adult households to shop and what type of budget do you think they have?

3 Tasks 1.Research and find out – then complete a PowerPoint on changes in disposable income over time. 2.Research and copy and past a chart that shows the following – ‘chart real household disposable income and gross domestic product per head, UK’. 3.Research how family size and spending patterns have changed since the 1960’s 4.List what the main factors are: - fewer children - ageing population - single people living alone - foods eaten away from home – what type of places and why? - carry out a survey among your friends to find out how often they eat food outside the home (not including school dinners) - find out what types of food they eat and the amount of money they spend Lesson objective – to understand the relationship between quality of diet and disposable income
