21st Century Skills Tracy Qualmann

Presentation Objectives Define the six categories of the 21st Century Skills Give an example of each skill Conclusion

21st Century Skills Solution Fluency Information Fluency Collaboration Fluency Creativity Fluency Media Fluency Digital Citizen

Solution Fluency Definition o whole-brain thinking o creativity + problem-solving = "just in time" learning Example When faced with a problem, students pair creativity and problem-solving skills to determine an outcome. If students are faced with a math story problem, they can draw out the problem. By taking each statement in the problem by itself, students can make illistrations to assist the visual learner. This practice of visually explaining the problem, students create an environment where they can solve the problem on the spot.

Information Fluency Definition o ability to access digital information  surfing and searching skills  knowing where to look for what  appropriate o ability to assess digitial information  knowing what is real  weeding through the huge amount of information Example When a student is asked to do a reseach paper, he/she can utilize the web to gather information, but then must sift through that information to determine what is credible.

Collaboration Fluency Definition o teamwork o working cooperatively o unconscience ability to collaborate o work with real and vitual teammates Example Through web 2.0 tools, i.e. googledocs, prezent, students can work collabortively on presentations, both in person and online.

Creativity Fluency Definition o artistic proficiency o added meaning through design, art, and storytelling o innovative design o using imagination o "creative minds create creative solutions" Example Students can use tools such as Movie Maker to express their ideas through animation. This allows for creative expression of their ideas. This allows for an alternative to the tradition oral presentation of their work. Another idea would be podcasting or video logs.

Media Fluency Definition o ability to determine the real message and the channel to use to best deliver message o ability to create/craft message using digital products o ability to marry channel and message to reach approriate audience Example If students have events coming up or information to deliver, they must determine the approriate means to do so. Once students determine that, they can then develope media to deliver the information. One example is if there is a fundraising food sale, students can create flyers, compose emails, and post posters to alert buyers.

Digitial Citizen Definition o who you are online o personalities should be consistent (in person and online) o be cautious (not everyone is who they say they are) Example Social media websites, i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, are means by which people can meet new people. Because individuals can load pictures of what ever they like, the receiver of the information can not be positive the information is accurate. A police officer can be protraying themselves as a child to attract a criminal.

Conclusion Todays student must.... have problem-solving skills (solution fluency); know how to effeciently and effectively gather information (information fluencey); have ability to work as a team (collaboration fluency); think outside stereotypical boundaries and enter the world of creativity (creativity fluency); be able to determine approriate means to deliver their messages (media fluency); be able to be a contributing membor to the digital world (digital citizen).
