11 Robert Burns, a poor man, an educated man, and a ladies’ man, is a representative of Scotland. He lived a life shortened by rheumatic heart disease, 1759-1796, but his life journey through poverty, informal education, disappointed love, nationalism, and literary and financial success can be identified by all Scots and common men. He has become almost a national symbol of all things. His life is like a love story with a happy ending.

15 The way people memoriali ze him 1. All of Scotland mourned his death, and afterwards many people donated money to support his widow and children. The monument in honor of him was first displayed to the public in 1877. 2. The day when it was first shown was declared a holiday and about 30,000 people came to watch. 3. The house in Alloway, where Burns was born, is now a museum of his life and work.
