2 Say What? What does this quote mean… “There are two ways to make a person feel homeless…One is to destroy his home and the other is to make his home look and feel like everybody else’s home”

3 Now change “home” with the word “CULTURE”… “There are two ways to make a person feel homeless…One is to destroy his CULTURE and the other is to make his CULTURE look and feel like everybody else’s CULTURE”

6 What is Culture? Defined: The way of life of people who share similar beliefs and customs. Trait = characteristics, features, habits, customs Culture includes… Language Religion Dress Style Government Food Music Jobs

7 What About Americans? Our rights? Our work ethic? How do we greet each other? What are they and with whom do you use each type? What else defines American culture??

8 Cultural Terms (pg. 29) Ethnocentrism – Attitude that one’s own ethnic group is superior or better than someone else’s. Can be positive and negative! Positive Negative -Patriotism and Pride -Racist or Religious Jokes -Making fun of another countries ways

9 Cultural Terms Cont… Cultural Borrowing – Adopting another group’s cultural traits. Example: Baseball is a sport we’ve played in America for years, but the Japanese borrowed the game and today it has become one of the county’s most popular!

13 Computers Because of American Culture…Our TV, Movies, and U.S. websites have caused 1/3 of the world to learn English!

14 Did You Know??? English is used on 80-90% of the world’s websites Airplane pilots use English when they fly across National Borders Because of technology…English is the most widely used SECOND language in the world!!

17 Lastly (pg. 33)… Differences in Development Two (2) Types: 1.Industrialized Countries – Hold 97% of the worlds patents (rights to inventions) like electricity, computers, TV, and others. Countries like the U.S., Japan, Australia, and South Korea

18 2.Developing Countries – Working toward industrialization. That just means their transportation, technology, and source for food and clothing is behind others. Countries in parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America are developing countries.
