When a number includes both whole numbers and fractions What is it called?
It is called a mixed number
Here are some mixed numbers
How much chocolate?
= Whole chocolate bar
If 1 bar contains 4 squares……. = 1 bar of chocolate
Then how many bars of chocolate are here? 10 8
80 4 = 80 ÷4 = 20
Can you do this on your whiteboard? = 1 bar of chocolate 32 6 = ??? Remember: numerator ÷ denominator
Can you do this on your whiteboard? = 1 bar of chocolate 32 6 = 32 ÷ 6 = 5r2 = Remember: The denominator stays the same

But, how do you convert a mixed number to an improper fraction? 1 2 2= ?
groups of 2 with 1 remaining. (2 x 2)+1 = 5 = 5 2
3 4 5= ? (5 x 4)+3 = 23 = = 23 ÷ 4 = 5r3 = 5 3 4
To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction what do you do? Keep the denominator the same. (Whole number × Denominator) + Numerator
