AP Human Geography AP Human Geography Thursday, 10-02-08 1.You need a textbook (use your textbook if you have it on campus). 2.Set up page 42 for class-work today. “Key Issue #1 ~ Where is the World’s Population Distributed?”

Read the case study on page 46 “Population Growth in India”. On page 42 in notebook, please answer the following...On page 42 in notebook, please answer the following... 1.Why does the Indian government hope that this year’s children will have fewer children than their parents? 2.Why do rural Indian families have large numbers of children? 3.How has India been able to increase their national wealth, and how is this impacting their growing population?

Read the case study on page 46 “Population Growth in India”. Answers: India’s population is growing by 18 million annually which will exceed 3 billion in a hundred years. Children are an economic asset because they help perform chores on the farm and are expected to provide for their parents in their old age. 1/15 infants die before year 1, so they have lots of children. India has increased national wealth by diffusing modern agricultural practices, building new industry, and developing natural resources. This new wealth is helping the expanding population with food, housing, and other basic services for the people. However, it may not be enough for the future.

Demography Demography is important for 3 reasons: 1.6.5 billion people alive on this planet right now. World Clock 2.World’s population increased at a faster rate between 1950-2000 than ever before. 3.All global population growth is in less developed countries (LDCs).

Overpopulation Problems when ratio of people in one area exceeds the availability of resources. What is the resource in this picture?

Population Concentrations Look at the maps on page 48 in the textbook.

This is a cartogram (A presentation of statistical data in geographical distribution on a map). It is deliberately distorted. What are the 2 largest countries by population?

What is the climate of the most populated areas? Humid low- latitude; warm mid- latitude; undiferenti ated highlands

Population Concentrations 2/3 of the world’s peoples are in 4 regions East Asia South Asia Southeast Asia Western Europe Global patterns are influenced by these regions. Global stock markets; technology made in Japan and China; most of our imports from China; U.S. transnational corps located in India.

Population Concentrations Similarities between the 4 regions: Live near an ocean or river Occupy low-lying areas with fertile soil and temperate climate In Northern Hemisphere between 10 and 55 degrees north latitude with the exception of part of SE Asia.

Classwork: P49 in textbook Find major differences in the 4 major population regions East AsiaEast Asia Southeast AsiaSoutheast Asia South AsiaSouth Asia EuropeEurope

East Asia: Eastern China, islands of Japan, Korean peninsula, island of Taiwan 1/5 of world’s people China, world’s most populated country 3 rd largest country in land, but interior is sparsely populated. Why? 20 urban areas 2/3 of people live in rural areas (farmers) Japan and South Korea 1/3 of population in 3 metropolitan areas 3/4s of population live in urban areas (industrial or service jobs)

South Asia: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, island of Sri Lanka. India, world’s 2 nd most populated country 3/4 th of the South Asia population Highest concentration of people in this region: 900 mile corridor from Lahore, Pakistan through India and Bangladesh to Bay of Bengal Along India’s two coastlines: Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal Most are rural (farmers) Only 1/4 th live in urban areas

Southeast Asia: Islands in Pacific and Indian Oceans 4 th largest region ½ billion people Largest number on island of Java Indonesia (4 th largest country which includes 13,677 islands) Philippines has high population areas Several river valley areas known as Indochina. (Vietnam)

Europe: Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and European portion of Russia 3 rd largest region 1/9 th of world’s people 4 dozen countries ranging in size from Monaco (1 square kilometer,.7 s/miles) to Russia (world’s largest country in land area when Asia parts added in). ¾ of people live in cities (less than 20% farmers). Dense network of transportation systems Europeans do not grow enough food for themselves Have to import Search for resources was reason for European colonization during 1400-1900s. Those resource become manufactured products.

End of Class Oral REVIEW ~ 1.What do demographers study? Distribution of people by age, gender, occupation, fertility, health, etc. 2.What problem exists from overpopulation? Ratio of people in given area is more than the available resources 3.What is a cartogram? Map which depicts size of countries according to population and not land 4.Where do most of the world’s people live? East Asia; South Asia; Southeast Asia; Europe
