2  Vocabulary Words  Estimate: an answer that is close to an exact number  Benchmark: A number used as a guide for making an estimate.  P.2 You can use a lesser number or an amount of something as a benchmark to estimate a greater number or amount.  Lets do number 1 together.  Do number 2 in your notebook

4  Vocabulary Words  Period: Three numbers written together, periods are separated by comma’s. 178,890  Place value:  There are three ways to write a number: Standard form: 729,000 (Short) Word form: seven hundred twenty – nine thousand Expanded form: 700,000 +20,000+9,000=

5  Numbers in a period are read together and separated by a place value word  Lets try: 167,987 One sixty seven hundred, nine hundred eighty seven.  Now you try: 289,678

7  Assemble a million cube. Go over questions on p. 7 as a class

10  Vocabulary Words:  Less than ( < ) : Symbol to show that the first number is less than the second.  More than ( < ) Symbol to show that the first number is less than the second.  Number Line: a line with numbers written on it in order.  The symbol looks like pac – man. Pac Man always eats the larger number.

11  When ordering numbers use their place value to compare numbers from greatest to least.  Line up the one’s place. Compare the digits starting from the greatest place. Compare the digits in the next place.
