Place value tells us what value each number has because of its place or position in any number.

 Each digit in a number has a place value.  In the number 4856, the digit 4 is in the thousands place value.  Meaning the place value is thousands. 4856 Place value is thousands

Digits All numbers are made from digits. Each digit in its right place gives a number its value What are the digits? 3 4 1 8 9 0 5 6 7 2

So lets try that out. 1 4 6 How do you know the value of this number? 1 46 Each digit has a place. Each place has a value. HTU Saying it out loud one hundred and forty six gives a clue. 100406

Important Point: “ Make sure that the students understand that a “wall” dividing two houses in a number is indicated by a ‘comma’. The ‘comma’ tells that the number to the ‘left’ of the ‘comma’ is in different house or a period.”

 Numbers can also be represented in expanded form.  This means writing the value of a number using place value of each digit.  The number 4856 in expanded form is: 4000 + 800 + 50 + 6
