Today is National “Good Neighbor Day.” How might you celebrate? Trivial Fact of the Day: The largest known volcano in our Solar System is Olympus Mons, and it is located on the planet Mars. Interesting Quote of the Day: “Good fences make good neighbors.” --Robert Frost (American poet) Vocabulary Word of the Day: eschew (verb) – This action word means to shun or avoid something. What are three yucky foods that you eschew? Why do you find them so disgusting?

4 Quiz #2 Apostrophes CLEAR DESK except for bubble sheet You are at a Level 0 the entire time. Eyes on your own paper. Cover up your answers as you go using a folder. Cheating is 4 demerits and a very serious conversation with your parents. Fill in bubbles neatly and completely. No stray marks. On your answer bubble sheet, start on question #83 and go through #98. You MAY write on the test. Use PENCIL. Once finished, turn everything over and you may SSR.

5 Three types of writing  Persuasive: convince others to agree with our facts, share our values, accept our argument and conclusions, and adopt our way of thinking.  Narrative: a story or account of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictiti ous.  Expository: investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner

6 What is OER?  OER stands for Open Ended Response  This is basically a short, timed essay as a part of a test  Interims include OER writing tests  This has many benefits…

7 Benefits of OER: 1. We will assess your writing on a rubric 2. You see be able to see growth in writing ability 3. You will be more prepared for AP 4. You will be more prepared for college classes 5. Your critical thinking will be pushed and developed.

8 Format  20 minutes to read a passage  40 minutes to write an essay

9 20 minutes to read??? Isn’t that excessive?  Passages will only be 1 page or less.  During the 20 minutes, you may not begin the essay.  Why do you think we might give you this length of time?

10 20 minute read Why 20 minutes? Train yourself to organize your thoughts:  Read, annotate, and deconstruct the prompt.  Determine author’s main point or theme  Underline pieces of evidence that support your statement about the main point  Ask yourself: “how does this author/story support this idea?”  Create an outline of your essay

11 40 minute write  2 pages  NOT MLA format  Single spaced  No header  One draft  Only working on your essay (no SSR when finished)

12 What? No SSR? Why not?  What do you think? (think silently)  Turn & tell your neighbor your thoughts

13 So what should I do if I finish early?  Improve your essay!  Proofread  Check citations for evidence  Add detail  Show what an awesome writer you really are

14 So… what do I need to write about?  A common question will ask you to (1) find the main idea & (2) find evidence from the passage to support what you think is the author’s main idea

15 Our 1 st In-class Mock OER:“Ovuh Dyuh” You will be writing your first OER in class! It will be based on the homework reading and will require preparation outside of class. This is not for a grade; it is just to see how our first timed-writing experience will feel like.

17 Other Helpful Vocab  Claim- a statement/argument.  Inferences- creating logical statement based off of a text.  Audience- the group of people that you are “writing for”. If you know your audience then you have a better idea of how to communicate your ideas.  Formal style- Precise use of language. Professional language.  Objective tone- a “matter of fact” voice in writing. Uses facts.  Author’s voice- the author’s style– shows the author’s attitude and personality  Conventions- spelling and capitalization.
