OUR NERVOUS SYSTEM THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Nervous system is our body's most important control system. It sends, receives, and processes nerve impulses throughout the body. These nerve impulses tell our muscles and organs what to do and how to respond to the environment. There are three parts of your nervous system that work together: the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and autonomic nervous system.

The Central Nervous System The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. It contains around 100 billion nerve cells. Nerve fibres form a network which allows nerve cells to communicate with each other.

We have as many nerve cells as the stars in the sky

The peripheral nervous system The peripheral nervous system carries messages to and fro from the central nervous system. It sends information to the brain and carries out orders from the brain. These messages are received by the senses. The eyes, ears, tongue, nose and skin have receptor cells which react to stimuli, such as light and sound. These messages tell the body what to do, such as which muscle to move.

Mobile phone rings….tring tring tring…… And we quickly press the green button on our iphone …….hello hello yes…..this is Riya here….

The autonomic nervous system The autonomic nervous system controls not thinking action, such as heart beat and digestion. The autonomic nervous system is part of the peripheral nervous system and it controls many organs and muscles within the body. In most situations, we are unaware of the workings of the autonomic nervous system because it functions in an unintentional, automatic manner. For example, we do not notice when blood vessels change size or when our heart beats faster.

Have you ever given a message to your stomach - My stomach – “hello I have eaten food now please digest it”….

The brain is the commander it gives commands to the nerves and the spinal cord

The spinal cord is a long bundle of nerves inside our spinal column, the vertebrae protects it. The spinal cord and nerves known as the nervous system lets messages flow back and forth between the brain and body.

Conclusion - The nervous system is made up of millions and millions of neurons. We were born with all the neurons brain can ever have, but many of them were not connected to each other. While learning new things, the messages travel from one neuron to another. Eventually, the brain starts to create connections between the neurons, so things become easier and we can do them better.

Keep your nervous system active

Keep your nervous system healthy Vitamins and minerals help build healthy nerves and tissues. Playing and exercising form a chemical called “serotonin” which is released in brain and makes our muscles feel relaxed and decreases stress. Feeling nervous for your presentation next….aren’t we full of nerves…….
