6 PP COLOBOC, Status Report | COSMO General meeting, 7-10 September 2009, Offenbach Bettems Jean-Marie (jean-marie.bettems [at] meteoswiss.ch) SMOSREX data SMOSREX (Surface Monitoring Of the Soil Reservoir EXperiment), has been in operation since January 2001 in Mauzac, near Toulouse in France. Continuous ground measurements of meteorological variables, soil moisture and temperature profiles have been taken over bare soil and a grass plot left fallow. NEW: Some data are made available by MeteoFrance: Dear ET member, Please find below the link to get local validation dataset from SMOSREX (near Toulouse) over a 3 year period: http://www.cnrm.meteo.fr/aladin/spip.php?rubrique43 since we agreed in June to share observational datasets for common validations of our land surface schemes. This is a first step in that direction. If some of you have data that they could share, we could put them at the same location or think about what Jean-Marie suggested (to be hosted under the COLOBOC web site). Jean-François Mahouf / SRNWP ET Soil and Surface

11 PP COLOBOC, Status Report | COSMO General meeting, 7-10 September 2009, Offenbach Bettems Jean-Marie (jean-marie.bettems [at] meteoswiss.ch) COLOBOC, task 1 – Roadmap Other issues have been recognized, but are not yet solved Points with loam type are not usable (at least when using some new parametrization introduced by Felix Ament) Still not all information is correctly initialized when cycling TERRA standalone runs Robustness of the code should be improved... There is a need to understand how much the evolution of the soil (and of the snow pack) differs between TERRA standalone and the full COSMO Simplified transfer scheme (Louis) No feedback loop between soil and atmosphere

16 PP COLOBOC, Status Report | COSMO General meeting, 7-10 September 2009, Offenbach Bettems Jean-Marie (jean-marie.bettems [at] meteoswiss.ch) The current radiation scheme in the COSMO-Model uses constant aerosol values for desert, sea, land and urban areas. New, monthly mean of the following aerosol types can be read from the external parameters: AER_SO4: Tegen (1997) aerosol type sulfate drops AER_DUST: Tegen (1997) aerosol type mineral dust AER_ORG: Tegen (1997) aerosol type organic AER_BC: Tegen (1997) aerosol type black carbon AER_SS: Tegen (1997) aerosol type sea salt This can be controlled by the new INT2LM Namelist Switch itype_aerosol = 1: Default and present option: no external parameters are read; the COSMO-Model uses constant values = 2: 12 monthly mean values for the above fields are read and the INT2LM computes an actual value for the given day and gives that to the COSMO-Model for further processing. Additional external parameters - Aerosols

20 PP COLOBOC, Status Report | COSMO General meeting, 7-10 September 2009, Offenbach Bettems Jean-Marie (jean-marie.bettems [at] meteoswiss.ch) MODIS derived vegetation (1) Historical records of vegetation characteristics reveal a substantial inter-annual variability of the start of season, which may limit the usefulness of a climatology based data set. A framework has been developed by R.Stöckli et al., using a prognostic phenology model with parameters constraint by MODIS data, which can provide an offline gridded forecast of the vegetation characteristics taking into account the actual evolution of the weather [Stöckli 2008]. Basically a statistical approach is used, relying on an ensemble Kalman filter to define the optimal parameters of the phenology model, for a specified set of meteorological data predictor (e.g. from a NWP model).

21 PP COLOBOC, Status Report | COSMO General meeting, 7-10 September 2009, Offenbach Bettems Jean-Marie (jean-marie.bettems [at] meteoswiss.ch) MODIS derived vegetation (2) The prognostic penology model includes the three main climatic controls of seasonal phenological processes: minimum daily temperature, mean daily vapor pressure deficit, mean daily global radiation (Growing Season Index, Jolly et al. 2005). The model derives LAI and FPAR (Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation) A 1000 members EKF is used to derives the optimal parameters of the prognostic phenology model; one set of parameters is computed for each type of vegetation. ‘… the model reproduces the inter-annual variability of start of season with correlations ranging between 0.6-0.9 when compared to independent ground observations.’ [Stöckli et al, Journal of Geophysical Research 2008]

22 PP COLOBOC, Status Report | COSMO General meeting, 7-10 September 2009, Offenbach Bettems Jean-Marie (jean-marie.bettems [at] meteoswiss.ch) 22 Predict vegetation dynamics in Switzerland Left panel: satellite derived LAI Right panel: forecast: coupled to NWP model MODIS derived vegetation (3)

23 PP COLOBOC, Status Report | COSMO General meeting, 7-10 September 2009, Offenbach Bettems Jean-Marie (jean-marie.bettems [at] meteoswiss.ch) MODIS derived vegetation (4) The proposed new action consists to compare the produced vegetation characteristics with the COSMO climatological information and to evaluate the impact of such an approach in the COSMO model (in particular on the surface fluxes). The CPU cost of the predictive model is neglectable. The CPU cost of the EKF is about 1 day per year of data, on 256 PU (9 years of MODIS data are available). The framework to produce the vegetation characteristics is already installed and running at MeteoSwiss, and R. Stöckli is willing to contribute to this action.

24 PP COLOBOC, Status Report | COSMO General meeting, 7-10 September 2009, Offenbach Bettems Jean-Marie (jean-marie.bettems [at] meteoswiss.ch) COLOBOC, task 4 Revision of TERRA and the associated look-up tables. 32 PP COLOBOC, Status Report | COSMO General meeting, 7-10 September 2009, Offenbach Bettems Jean-Marie (jean-marie.bettems [at] meteoswiss.ch) Experiment with all model configurations (COSMO-EU, COSMO-7, COSMO-2) shows a degradation of T_2m and TD_2m biases: The temperature is generally higher in new configuration, leading to a more positive bias at the vast majority of the stations, and to less negative bias only at stations north and south of the Alps. The negative bias within the Alps remains or is even more pronounced at particular stations.temperature The dewpoint temperature bias is switching from an overestimation (wet bias) to an underestimation (dry bias) at most inland stations.dewpoint temperature Simulations with COSMO
