1 Safeguarding & Welfare of Children & Young People

2 R ESPONSIBILITIES OF THE T EACHER /C OACH Dealing with bullying – this should be handled by the teacher or coach in the first instance and referred to higher authority if need be. Building self-esteem & self- confidence by promoting enjoyment & achievement. Unconditional acceptance of the child/young person no matter what their financial, cultural, religious or ethnic background. Empowering children and young people Ensuring equality by not discriminating or allowing anyone to be placed in a disadvantageous position.

3 I NAPPROPRIATE R ELATIONSHIPS In the eyes of the Law, an individual is regarded a minor up until their 19 th birthday. Although young people aged 16-18 can legally give consent to sex, it is an offence to have an intimate relationship if you are a volunteer or staff member in a position of trust, i.e. teacher, coach, physio, etc Be aware of the limits & boundaries of your role as a teacher/coach; emotionally & physically.

4 A BUSE Neglect – failing to meet a child or young person’s basic needs Physical Abuse – hurt or injured or failing to prevent an injury Sexual Abuse – using the child in any form to provide a person with sexual gratification Emotional Abuse – frequent threatening, tautening or sarcastic behaviour or over protection or affection Bullying - The use of a position or power to intimidate others by fear, oppression or threat. Abuse comes under 5 categories:

5 A teacher/coach should be trained to identify signs of abuse. Attending a child protection course would be beneficial. Signs can be physical or behavioural; some examples are given below: Unexplained injuries or bruises Change in personality or behaviour Becoming withdrawn Anxiety & fear Aggression towards others

6 M AINTAINING A FUN BUT SAFE ENVIRONMENT Teachers & coaches are responsible for the Health & Safety of participants whilst they are under their care. Injuries, illness and other emergencies A teacher & coach must recognise the dangers of injury & illness & when its appropriate to remove children from activities; and even to refer on to a first aider, parent or person in authority. Risk Assessment

7 Whistle-blowing is revealing or raising concerns over misconduct or malpractice within an organisation. W HISTLE - BLOWING In the case of a school environment, you would contact the school counsellor, your tutor, the school nurse, the head teacher or go directly to Social Services. If you as a coach or a player had any concerns you could go to the Club Welfare Officer or directly to The FA Case Management Team.

8 CRB – C RIMINAL R ECORD B UREAU D ISCLOSURES This is a service that enables organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work, especially that involve children or vulnerable adults. The CRB was established under part five of the Police Act 1997 and was launched in March 2002. All those working with children, young people & vulnerable adults are legally required to be CRB checked.
