3 Suicide warning signs Talking or even making jokes about suicide Giving away prize possessions Saying goodbye to friends and family in a way that is different as though final goodbye Suicide and death being written about in poems, journals or essays Interest in ways to gain access to weapons

4 Facts 90% of people that are suicidal are depressed Feeling that things will not change Teens tell friends and other peers they are suicidal more often than adults Suicidal people do not really want to die

5 Signs of Teen Depression Loss of interest in activities they use to enjoy Decreased level of motivation Lack of energy and often tired Becomes irritable easily and has anger outburst Cries easily

6 Signs of Teen Depression Eating and sleeping patterns change Withdraws from family and friends Feeling sad and that there is no hope Writes things that are dark in nature

7 Effects of Teen Depression that are a cry for help Experiencing problems at school that is not the teen’s usual behavior Running away or talking about running away Drug and alcohol use (usually an attempt to self- medicate Low self esteem (depression can amplify feelings of being unattractive, unworthy or like a failure in life

8 Effects continued Reckless behavior (depression often leads to risk taking behavior) Violence (This occurs more with males that have felt bullied)

9 Difference in Sadness and Depression Normal teenage ups and downs are short lived Depressive symptoms last over an extended period of time for months

10 Self Injury Self injury is now called non-suicidal self injury (NSSI) It is defined as the deliberate injury to body tissue without suicidal intent Most common forms of self injury the behavior of cutting, carving the skin, banging, punching, or biting oneself

11 Self Injury and Suicide Self Injury is a maladaptive coping skill rather than a suicide attempt This does not mean there is no relationship between self injury and suicide as 40% of those that self injury also report having suicide ideation

12 What Actions To Take If you suspect someone may be suicidal, depressed or a self-injurer then always report it to an adult Always respond in a caring way and listen to them Let them know you are concerned and if you think they suicidal then never be afraid to ask if they are thinking of hurting themselves.
