Simple Machines

What are the simple machines?

Inclined Plane An inclined plane is a slanting surface that connects a lower level to a higher level. Examples: a wheelchair ramp and a slide

How does an inclined plane help us do work? Inclined planes let you use less force to do work For example, instead of lifting the box straight up into the truck, Moby can use the ramp. It lets him use less force by spreading the work out over a long distance.

Wedge A wedge is often made from two inclined planes put together. Examples: a doorstop, a knife, your front teeth

How do wedges help us do work? A wedge uses force to split objects apart For example, an axe lets us split things apart easily. Your teeth help you break your food apart. `
