6 Common Names A lot of chemicals have common names as well as the proper IUPAC name. Some chemicals that should always be named by common name and never named by the IUPAC method are: H2O water, not dihydrogen monoxide NH3 ammonia, not nitrogen trihydride CH4 methane, not carbon tetrahydride

7 More Common Names - Elements that exist as diatomics
Remember: BrINClHOF These elements only exist as PAIRS. Note that when they combine to make compounds, they are no longer elements so they are no longer in pairs! You can give students 2 ways to remember the diatomics 1) Mr. Brinclhof 2) 7,7,7 - the 7 molecules starting at element 7 that make a 7 (+ hydrogen)

8 How do I name Covalent Compounds?
Prefix System (binary compounds) 1. Less electronegative atom comes first. 2. Add prefixes to indicate # of atoms. Omit mono- prefix on the FIRST element. ALWAYS add a prefix in front of the second element. 3. Change the ending of the second element to -ide.

nona- deca- NUMBER 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 For this slide – you can either give examples of compounds containing each prefix (e.g. carbon Dioxide) or you can give real life examples for the different prefixes (e.g. monocle, tricycle, octopus etc)
