Quote Sandwiches 10 th grade

What is a quote sandwich? A way of incorporating your quotes smoothly into your writing and explaining the quote.

Why a SANDWICH? You can’t have a sandwich without the two pieces of bread surrounding the “meat”.

How do I start? First, you need to introduce your quote. Never just “throw” a quote into your writing. Bad Example: Equality showed the Transgression of Preference throughout the novella. “We wished to be sent to the Home of the Scholars” (Rand 24). Why is this a BAD EXAMPLE?

How do I start? Bad Example: Equality showed the Transgression of Preference throughout the novella. ________________“We wished to be sent to the Home of the Scholars” (Rand 24). DO NOT start a sentence with a quote. Good Example: Equality showed the Transgression of Preference throughout the novella. At one point, he said, “We wished to be sent to the Home of the Scholars” (Rand 24). Better Example: Equality showed the Transgression of Preference several times throughout the novella by saying things like, he “wished to be sent to the Home of the Scholars” (Rand 24).

Now we have the top bun….

What would be the “meat”?

THE QUOTE!!!!!!

So now…all we need is the bottom bun… What do you think we include in the bottom bun?

So now…all we need is the bottom bun… The explanation of the quote… Equality showed the Transgression of Preference several times throughout the novella by saying things like, he “wished to be sent to the Home of the Scholars” (Rand 24). This would be a transgression of preference because to prefer one thing over another is considered a sin in Equality’s society. Here, Equality is saying that he prefers to be given the job in the Home of Scholars over all the other jobs. If the council knew what he was thinking, he would get into trouble for having a preference.

So now…all we need is the bottom bun… Should consist of at least a 2-3 sentence explanation of the quote. Equality showed the Transgression of Preference several times throughout the novella by saying things like, he “wished to be sent to the Home of the Scholars” (Rand 24). This would be a transgression of preference because to prefer one thing over another is considered a sin in Equality’s society. Here, Equality is saying that he prefers to be given the job in the Home of Scholars over all the other jobs. If the council knew what he was thinking, he would get into trouble for having a preference.

So…what does the whole sandwich look like together? Equality showed the Transgression of Preference several times throughout the novella by saying things like, he “wished to be sent to the Home of the Scholars” (Rand 24). This would be a transgression of preference because to prefer one thing over another is considered a sin in Equality’s society. Here, Equality is saying that he prefers to be given the job in the Home of Scholars over all the other jobs. If the council knew what he was thinking, he would get into trouble for having a preference.

Oh yeah…! Don’t forget the in-text citation!!! Note that it is surrounded by PARENTHESIS, it is AFTER the quotation marks, and the punctuation goes AFTER the parenthesis.

Now… It is your turn…. Remember you have to incorporate 2 quotes from Anthem into your “I” essay. Using the graphic organizer I gave you, find your two quotes and create your quote sandwiches to incorporate into your essay.
