2 Ancestry Lineage. People related to family from past times

3 Assimilation Adapting/fitting in/becoming a part of a new culture or situation. Italians were known for taking any job they could get. They were hardworkers and manual laborers and never accepted charity offerings.

4 “Birds of Passage” Millions of immigrants who arrived in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries had intentions of returning to their villages in The Old World. They came to America to earn enough money to return home and buy new land to make up for what they lost.

5 Culture Ways of life, beliefs, and customs of a particular society or group.

6 Descendant From an ancestor. Related to a person or group who lived in the past

7 Enclaves Communities/cliques Italians settled into certain neighborhoods depending on their exact place of origin. For example: Neapolitans and Sicilians settled in different parts of New York while northern Italians settled in California. This is how “Little Italy’s” began to form

8 Immigrant An Immigrant is a person who comes to one country from another with intentions of living there permanently.

9 “L’isola delle Lacrime” “The Island of Tears” was what Italians coming to America coined as the name for Ellis Island. They were an impoverished group of people with hardly any belongings. Many were lucky to have their families with them.

10 La Famiglia La Famiglia or “the family” was the core of Italian immigrant life and often seen as the root of survival. As Italians settled in America certain aspects of their lives began to change. language customs/traditions

11 Migratory Laborer Workers who had to travel to find jobs.

12 I Padroni They were men who exploitatively employed or found work for Italian immigrants in America. He also acted as a neighborhood banker, loan office, travel agent, interpreter, and legal counselor.

13 Patriarchal Relating to the man/father as the head of the household.

14 Persecution The unfair treatment or harassment of people because of religion, race, background, or beliefs.

15 Prejudice Unfair dislike for a group because of race, religion, etc. A preconceived judgment or opinion.

16 Resentment This is a feeling of anger or displeasure about someone or something unfair. Many Italians often resented the fact that they had to leave their homeland. Since the immigrants were poor and lost the land they cultivated in Italy, they were forced to assimilate to life in America.

17 “La Cosa Nostra” Refers to the name of the Sicilian Mafia which emerged in Sicily during the mid 19th century. The American mafia followed suit during the late 19th century following waves of emigration from Sicily.
