Muscular System Mrs. Smalley

Function of the Muscular System The muscular system enables movement of your body and internal organs. The muscular system enables movement of your body and internal organs. Muscles have many functions, such as: Muscles have many functions, such as: –Keeping your heart beating –Pulling your mouth into a smile –Moving the bones of your skeleton

Types of Muscle 1. Involuntary muscle – muscle that is not under your conscious control –Example: breathing and digesting food 2. Voluntary muscle – muscles that are under your conscious control –Example: smiling, turning a page in your book

Three Types of Muscle Tissue There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac 1. Skeletal muscle – are attached to the bones of your skeleton and provide the force that moves your bones –They are voluntary muscles that can get tired easily.

Three Types of Muscle Tissue 2. Smooth muscle – muscle that makes up most of your organs (ex: stomach) – –After you eat, the muscle of your stomach contracts, moving the food around to help it digest. – –They are involuntary muscles that do not get tired.

Three Types of Muscle Tissue 3. Cardiac muscle – found only in the heart –They are involuntary and do not get tired.

Structure of the Muscular System Tendons – attach the skeletal muscles to bone. Tendons – attach the skeletal muscles to bone. Tendons are strong connective tissue at the end of a muscle that connect to the bone.

Muscles at Work Muscle cells contract when they receive messages from the nervous system. Muscle cells contract when they receive messages from the nervous system. Muscle cells can only contract so skeletal muscles must work in pairs. Muscle cells can only contract so skeletal muscles must work in pairs. While one muscle contracts, the other muscle in the pair relaxes to its original length. While one muscle contracts, the other muscle in the pair relaxes to its original length. For example: In order to bend the arm at the elbow, the bicep contracts and in order to return the arm and bicep to its original shape, the tricep has to contract.
