The answers! Please use integrity when you correct.

1. What were some of the dangers that Australopithecus encountered? 2. Why weren’t the Australopithecus able to make fire? 3. Why did the Australopithecus not have art or religion? How do you think this affected their species?

1. Fast predators, scarce food supply, and the harsh environment were some of the dangers faced by Australopithecus. 2. They had no fire because they were not able to figure out what the elements were to make fire. 3. They did not have art or religion because they were too busy trying to survive. This had a negative impact on their species because there was nothing to pass down from generation to generation that explained their culture or beliefs. It is even possible that they didn’t have any based on their lack of art, religion, and ceremonies.

1. What did the Homo Habilis use fire for and how did they get it? 2. What does Homo Habilis mean and why do you think they were given this name? 3. Why did Homo Habilis live all over Africa instead of settling down in just one location?

1. Homo Habilis used fire for light and warmth. They got fire only when they found things burning from natural causes. 2. Homo Habilis means “handy man.” They got this name because they were the first tool makers. 3. Because they had to follow their prey during hunting, Homo Habilis needed to move around and couldn’t settle down in one place.

1. Were the Homo Erectus the first to develop fire and what were the special uses? 2. What were the tactics used to capture their meals and what were the animals they ate? 3. On which continents were the Homo Erectus located and how many people were usually in a Homo Erectus group?

1. The Homo Erectus were the first to master fire, and they used fire for many things. One was to capture their meals. Two was to enable themselves to migrate to colder countries because the fire kept them warm. 2. Their tactics were to trap animals with fire or a swamp so they could pelt them and cause internal bleeding then they die. The other way was to drive them off of a cliff. 3. The Homo Erectus lived in the continent of Africa. Later they migrated to colder places like Europe, and Asia. The Homo Erectus usually lived in groups of a little over 100.

1. For what did Neanderthals use fire? List at least three things. 2. What was the Neanderthals diet and how did this affect their physical appearance? 3. Describe a typical Neanderthal grave.

1. Neanderthals used fire for light, to scare away animals, to cook food, to keep warm. 2. Neanderthals’ typical diet contained the meat of a mammoth, small rodents, elk and deer, as well as berries and nuts. Because of the large amount of protein in the diet, Neanderthals were very stocky and muscular. 3. A typical Neanderthal grave contained the dead dude, food, tools, and had flowers on top.

1. Why do you think the Cro-Magnons were able to have religion and ceremonies? 2. What was their first piece of clothing? What was it made from? Where was it worn on them? 3. What was one food that the Cro-Magnons ate? How did they get it?

1. Because Cro-Magnons organized their communities, they could share the work. They were also smart. This saved them time, so they were able to do more than just survive. It allowed them the time and opportunity to develop religion and ceremonies and to do art. 2. The first piece of clothing was a belt. It was made from animal hide and was worn around their waist. 3. They ate bison, deer, wild horses, wooly mammoths, berries, onions, cabbage, carrots, and more. The meat was hunted by the men in hunting parties, and the women and children gathered the wild berries and vegetables.

1. How did the Modern Humans put people into a wealth status if there was no money? 2. What tools did the Modern Humans use to hunt their prey? 3. What livestock did they raise? How did this change their lives from the time of following prey to hunt?

1. Social class depended on where you lived, what occupation you had, and what you owned. 2. Modern Humans used spears to kill their prey. 3. They raised cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. Raising animals made life easier because it was safer and gave them more time to spend with their families and to develop art, religion, and more.

1. What is the most interesting thing you learned from this Early Humans project? 2. How did you like working with PowerPoint? When might you use PowerPoint again? Do you think Ms. McClure should use PowerPoint with students again? Why or why not?

Share answers aloud with your tablemates.

 If you didn’t get any answers wrong, then hooray for you, and you have a score of 100%.  If you did get some answers incorrect, then add up the number you got wrong. Each question is worth five points, so multiply your number wrong by 5. Subtract the product from 100%, and you will have your percent. 93 – 100% = A73 – 77% = C 90 – 92% = A-70 -72% = C- 88 – 89% = B+68 – 69% = D+ 83 – 87% = B63 – 67% = D 80 – 82% = B-60 – 62% = D- 78 – 79% = C+59% & below = F
