8 Poland is northeastern Europe’s largest and most populous country! Poland was divided among its neighbors in the 1700, and regained its independence shortly after WW1. However, after WWII the Soviet Union formed a communist government to rule the country. In 1989 the communist government allowed free elections. Many businesses are now owned by people, many in their local communities. Strengthened ties with Western countries… Joined NATO in 1999. Warsaw is the capital of Polish life and the area has over 2 millions people, located on the Vistula river in central Poland.
