4. STATE FLOWER : Wood Violet The wood violet was chosen because it is common in Wisconsin. It was also chosen because its green leaves and purple petals sway in the breeze reflecting Wisconsin’s scenic beauty. Wood violets are commonly seen in wet woodlands and meadow areas and along roadsides. They are popular in the eastern U.S. Wood violets usually bloom between March and June. It is also a state flower in Illinois, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. The leaves on the wood violet can be eaten. 5. The American water spaniel is Wisconsin’s state dog because it’s native to the state. It’s also good for the economy because it helps the sport of hunting. Sometimes an American water spaniel can have a small white dot on their chest. Did you know it was selected to be Wisconsin’s state dog in 1985? It has a curled, wavy outer coat and a protective undercoat. It has chocolate colored hair. The American water spaniel is a medium sized dog and has an oily coat. 6. STATE SOIL: Antigo Silt Antigo silt is Wisconsin’s state soil because it reminds us to take care of our soil resources and it’s essential to Wisconsin’s economy. It was also because it’s common around Wisconsin. Antigo silt was selected in 1983. Did you know it was named after Antigo, Wisconsin? It supports dairying, potato growing, timber, and was created during the last great glaciers. It’s organic matter was from prehistoric forests. 7. The white – tailed deer is Wisconsin’s state wildlife animal because its strength and power reflects Wisconsin. Deer hunting helps the economy and white – tailed deer are very common around Wisconsin. It was also chosen because of its regal structure. Did you know the white – tailed deer became the state animal in 1957? It’s also able to run up to 40 miles per hour. They are also able to jump 9 foot fences and can swim up to 13 miles per hour. White – tailed deer get their first molt at about 5 months old. They mark their territories by rubbing their antlers on a tree. 8. STATE TREE: _Sugar Maple The sugar maple was chosen because it’s common around Wisconsin. It was also chosen because it is the largest and most important of the hardwoods. The leaves are bright colors, for example red, orange, and yellow can be some of the colors. Did you know the sugar maple became the state flower in 1949?
