9 Studentship Grants Purpose Multi-year financial support to students, especially those in graduate studies Build research capacity in Manitoba Eligibility Registered as a full-time student at a Manitoba university New for 2015 – funding option for Honours students writing a thesis Engaged in or about to start the research portion of the thesis or dissertation For graduate students, an original project, not solely a literature review Any discipline, provided research fits within the research priorities GrantFunding Per GrantClosingAward Studentship Honours Masters Doctoral $ 5,000 per year (1 year) $15,000 per year (up to 2 years) $20,000 per year (up to 3 years) March 4, 2015June 2015

13 Focused Research Overview Application Information: Project Guides Eligibility: Includes universities, research firms and other research organizations (unlike grants which include universities only) Ethics: Tri-Council Intellectual Property: Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries owns all rights; researcher has a non-exclusive, perpetual, fully-paid and royalty- free licence to use the research

15 Statistics in Gambling Research Gambling research often dominated by Psychology Other major disciplines: Sociology, Community Health, Indigenous Studies, Economics, and Business/Marketing Important role for Statistics across all disciplines Datasets often built from survey data, electronic game play metrics or treatment metrics; data may be cross-sectional and longitudinal Types of research questions examined (with analysis techniques): Associations between variables or risk factors or cause-effect relationships (ANOVA, regression) Longitudinal studies on the causes, prevention and treatment of problem gambling Instrument development and validation (factor analysis) Segmentation (latent class analysis) and examination of specific target populations
