New England Colonies Middle Colonies Southern Colonies

New England Colonies Religion: The Puritans left Europe because of religious persecution. Religion: The Puritans set up a COVENANT COMMUNITY - God would protect them and make them do well.

New England Colonies (cont.) Government: They practiced DIRECT DEMOCRACY. Every citizen made the laws in town meetings. Economy: Major Industries/Businesses: Fishing, shipbuilding, lumbering. (WHY?)

Southern Colonies Economy – based on making money ($$$$) – farmed cash crops such as tobacco or rice with indentured servants and/or slaves. Social – closer ties to Great Britain, religion was not a big part of their life.

Indentured Servant vs. Slave Indentured Servant Agreed to work for a specific amount of time to in New World in exchange for ticket out of England. Slave Forced to work for life without pay, could be bought or sold like property.

Cavaliers – Virginia Cavaliers were nobles from England. The King of England gave them large pieces of land in Virginia.
