“DESIRE FOR TOLERATION” NEW ENGLAND COLONIES Reasons Settled -Political freedom, toleration for Puritans, trade Important Jobs -Trade, fishing, shipbuilding Important Terms Subsistence Farming -Growing enough crops to feed your family Town Meetings -A gathering of all land owners to make decisions (DEMOCRACY)

(ex: tobacco, rice) Plantation -Large farm in which workers were mainly African slaves

Catholics (Maryland) Catholics (Maryland) -Found mainly in Southern Colonies -Believed in tolerating other Christian groups only (All religions tolerated today!).
