1 Status and Highlights of the Pulsed Magnet Program as of summer 2010, mid-point in current award period Delivered 350 th science pulse > 70T in 75T magnets assembly. (March 2008) Completed rebuild & rework of 100T outsert coils 1-4, (November 2008) Completed assembly of 100T Outsert, (January 2009) Science Program delivers 100 th 85T pulse (Insert #1) (May 2009) 1 st insert fault, non destructive as predicted. (June 2009) Completed conceptual design of Duplex user magnet upgrade. (October 2009) Magnet Group awarded R&D 100 Award (MRI for Carry-on Liquids) (October 2009) Science Program delivers 150 th 85T pulse (Insert #2) (December 2009) Completed conceptual design of 95T – 100T insert upgrade (May 2010) Commissioned 4 MJ Capacitor bank for User Program (June 2010) Insert #3 fabricated and delivered as a spare (June 2010) Science Program delivers 177 th 85T pulse (Insert #2) (July 2010) Released Outsert Conductor Procurement Package (spare outsert work) (July 2010) Complete 10mm CAD Package for 95T-100T Upgrade (August 2010) WR

2 Vision for the Pulsed Magnet Program (2012) as of summer 2010, mid-point in current award period Deliver 2 nd generation insert magnet upgrade (95T–100T ) (Jan 2011) 95T attainable, 100T operations at proof of principal level Deliver duplex magnet technology (> 70T ops for user program) (June 2011) Complete fabrication of outsert coil replacements coils 3,4,5,6 (Oct 2011) Large cross section Cu-Nb conductor developed & delivered (July 2011) Development in progress 2010 at Bochvar, #1 priority Production of outsert coils #1 & #2 using Cu-Nb conductor Enable increase in field from Outsert circuit #1 TBD?

3 Vision for the Pulsed Magnet Program (2017) as of summer 2010, mid-point in current award period Delivering sustained 100 T science pulses using 2 nd generation coil upgrades. Operating 10-50 MJ capacitor bank or new Lithium-ion battery bank. User facility operating at 80T–85T using duplex magnet technology optimized for new power technology. coils use enhanced composite and conductor technologies. Implementing 3 rd generation coil technology for generator magnets. 3 rd generation upgrades implement fault tolerant coil technology and enhanced materials.
