3  Hokkaido is the second largest of the four main Japanese islands.  The main attractions for visitors are nature and winter sports.  The island produces most of Japan's dairy foods as well as large quantities of rice and vegetables.

4  Honshu is the largest island of Japan.  There are many rivers, including the Shinano River, Japan's longest.  The highest peak is the active volcano Mount Fuji.

5  Kyushu is the third largest and furthest south of Japan's four main islands and a place of remarkable volcanic attraction.  It is considered the birthplace of Japanese civilization.  For centuries, it was Japan's gateway to Asia and the rest of the world.

6 Shikoku is the smallest of Japan's four main islands. Has a beautiful coastline and it has the best noodles in Japan The Buddhist priest Kukai, considered the father of Japanese culture.

7 Japan has the world's tenth-largest population, with over 127 million people

8 Spring - (March-May) is probably the best time to visit Japan with cherry trees blossoming. If you attend a cherry-blossom viewing party, you'll probably enjoy a nice warm afternoon but need a sweater in the evening

9  Summer - (June-August) is hot and humid everywhere except Hokkaido and the mountains. (Almost 40 degrees in many places in recent years and over 30 degrees most days for several months) There's a rainy season in June. 10 Autumn - (September-November) is a time of changeable, unpredictable Autumn is considered by many to be the most beautiful season in Japan. Autumn is marked by an invigorating crispness in the air, clear skies, and the rich harvests of fruits, vegetables, and delicacies from the sea

11 Winters - (December-February) are long with lots of snow in Hokkaido, the Japan Alps and much of the Japan Sea coast. The rest of the mainland gets some amount of snow, sometimes little or none, and temperatures hover in the low single digits.

12 Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan at 12,388 ft. An active volcano that last erupted in 1707 – 08, Mount Fuji is just west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently in lots of art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers.
