2 Canadian population patterns, particularly since World War II have had a serious impact on social trends in this country – those who study these are known as Demographers areas particularly affected include education employment recreation business retirement health care

3 Data on population is collected every 10 years (max.) in what is called a Census. Sometimes, abbreviated a mini-Census in conducted every 5 years This information is used by : the government to determine immigration policies, education funding, health care requirements etc.

4 businesses to determine market groups, research and development requirements media to determine advertising groups and coverage type

5 Demographic Groups in Canada since 1945 Baby Boom or ‘Boomers’ 1946-1966 large birth group broken down into: Yuppies, D.I.N.K.S (early stage) refers to Young Urban Professionals who are now leaving rural settings to move to the cities, and Double Income No Kids who are those with no children and both spouses working Generation X – 1960-1966

6 Baby Bust nicknamed Twenty Somethings, 1967-1979 Echo Boom broken down into Generation Y or Echo Kids, 1980-1995 early Echo Boom children also known as Puppies

7 Yet-Unnamed most recent demographic nicknamed Generation Z, Millennium Kids, 1996-2012

8 How does population patterns affect each of these areas? Think about things in your community. Historically how have they been created or affected based on population trends? How do these trends affect things such as television or product purchasing?
