1 Session VI Emergency Procedures Utility Control Chemical Spills Chemical Exposure Fire Extinguisher Basics -Will be covered during the face-to-face meeting with the Fire Marshal.

2 UTILITY CONTROL Shut off services to your facility that may be dangerous during an emergency. Science teachers must know the location of all utility shut-offs associated with their classrooms. Water, Gas, Electric Mechanical / Electrical Rooms, AC Equipment

4 Electrical Panels Electrical panels supply voltage to specific areas breakers should be labeled to indicate the area of supply

6 Chemical Spills Small Spills Isolate area Contain chemical (sand) Remove Waste Large Spills Mercury Contact EHS Office 1. Obtain the proper PPE (gloves, apron, face shield) Contact Haz Mat Team 2. Retrieve the mercury with an aspirator 3. Cover droplets with sulfur to reduce volatility

7 Emergency Response to Chemical Exposure Emergency Medical Response When responding to students with chemicals in the eyes, arms, or hands the teacher should: 1. Flush the eye immediately with potable water for 15 minutes. Apply eye dressing and gauze wrapping. 2. Do not try to neutralize acids or bases. 3. If contact lenses are being used the water should wash them away. If lenses adheres to the eye do not try and remove. 4. Contact administration for emergency medical personal When responding to students with chemicals on the body the teacher should: 1. Rinse the affected area with water for 15 minutes. If the affected area is on the head or over a large portion o the body the drench shower should be used. 2. Do not try to neutralize acids or bases. 3. Keep student warm with fire blanket if needed. 4. Contact administration for emergency medical personal.
