Beam Vacuum Quality Control Outline  VSC consolidation  VSC support  Organization  Status Cédric Garion on behalf of TE-VSC Cédric Garion TE/VSC Beam Vacuum Quality Control 3 rd LHC Splice Review, 12-14 Nov ‘12

VSC consolidation – Beam Vacuum (1) 1.Eliminate critical PIM  Corrective action: ~14  Ball tests  localization of buckled fingers and finger exchange  Endoscopic inspections  Preventive consolidation (TETM, 17/01/2011)  Arc extremities : 18  Magnet exchanges: 18*4  Damage bellows: ~10

1.Ball test (TE/VSC & BE/BI) 2.Interconnection opening (SIT) 3.Beam line cutting (SIT) 4.Dummy PIM installation 5.PIM reconditioning (VSC) // Lip measurements* (ICIT) // Endoscopy (ICIT) 6.PIM positioning, tack welding and PIM bellows protection (VSC) 7.PIM welding (SIT) 8.Beam line leak test (VSC) 9.Ball test (VSC) VSC consolidation – Beam Vacuum (1) Work is done in collaboration with the Special Intervention Team (SIT) Simplified PIM consolidation sequence: Cédric Garion TE/VSC Beam Vacuum Quality Control 3 rd LHC Splice Review, 12-14 Nov ‘12 * Required for PIMs at magnet exchanges and for damaged bellows In case of buckled RF fingers, the same PIM body is re-installed at the same location (PIM WG, 2/12/08)

Cédric Garion TE/VSC Beam Vacuum Quality Control 3 rd LHC Splice Review, 12-14 Nov ‘12 2. Protect against overpressure:  Install rupture disks and non-return valves  Install protective shells to limit the bellows deformations 3.Protect against electrical arcs and melted particle projection  Install protective shells (PEI) VSC consolidation – Beam Vacuum (2)

Cédric Garion TE/VSC Beam Vacuum Quality Control 3 rd LHC Splice Review, 12-14 Nov ‘12 4. Protect against pressure wave, cold gas and debris propagation (no impact on SMACC):  Reduce sector valve closure time  Install fast shutter valves close to the RF cavities VSC consolidation – Beam Vacuum (3)

VSC Support – Beam Vacuum (1) Check integrity of bellows:  Beam screen, PIM and X line bellows  Visual inspections of bellows after opening and before closure  Installation of temporary protections in place throughout the period during which the interconnections are open: rubber strip + stainless steel foil Additional protections (1 protective half shell per line) will be installed during (at least) the cutting activities. Cédric Garion TE/VSC Beam Vacuum Quality Control 3 rd LHC Splice Review, 12-14 Nov ‘12

1.Interconnection opening (MSC): W bellows, thermal and radiative shields 2.Rubber protections on V1, V2 and X bellows (MSC) 3.M bellows shell dismounting (MSC) 4.Interconnection inspection and thermometers disassembly (IC QA) 5.Rubber protection removal and bellows inspection (ICIT) 6.Rubber and stainless steel foil protection installation (ICIT) 7.Installation of additional dedicated protective half shell before the cutting train and removal after ~1 week (recycling) (ICIT) 8.Beam vacuum line leak tests (VSC) 9.Temporary protection removal and bellows inspection (ICIT) 10.Installation of permanent protective half shells (ICIT) 11.Interconnection inspection and thermometers assembly (IC QA) 12.M bellows shell assembly (MSC) 13.Interconnection closure (MSC) VSC Support – Beam Vacuum (2) Opening/closure and inspection/protection sequence: Cédric Garion TE/VSC Beam Vacuum Quality Control 3 rd LHC Splice Review, 12-14 Nov ‘12

VSC Support – Beam Vacuum (3) Inspection work flow:  The status of existing non-conformities is available (based on EDMS data) Expected state 1 st inspection: state conformed to expectations YesNo NC follow up (if exists): to cut or not to cut? Visual localisation of damage, if any, and protections Other activities: splice, leak tests,ELQA,… 2 nd inspection: state conformed to expectations NC follow up: to cut or not to cut Delete of damage localisation marks, Installation of the protective half shells NC opening Yes No NC opening NC closure

VSC Organization LHC cold beam vacuum LBV:  RF Ball tests,  Rupture disks and non- return valves, EIV:  PIM repair/consolidation  Beam line inspection and protection  Protective half shells Extra resources:  1 tech. student (traceability)  0.5 FSU (PIM)  6 staffs from polish collaboration: cold beam line inspections and protections Cédric Garion TE/VSC Beam Vacuum Quality Control 3 rd LHC Splice Review, 12-14 Nov ‘12
