Immigration and Citizenship Lesson 9: We ALL Come From Many Lands

Objective  Students will develop a sense of empathy with the experiences of immigrants who came to America.  Students will recognize our national motto, “e pluribus unum,” as meaning “out of many, one” and as being descriptive of our country.

Vocabulary  Immigrant – a person who leaves his or her own country to live in a different country  Motto - a short saying that explains the beliefs of a group of people  E Pluribus Unum - Latin words that mean, “out of many, one”

An Immigrant’s Story  Have you ever heard the song “White Christmas”? It begins, “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know.” The song, along with many others popular songs, was written by an immigrant named Irving Berlin.

An Immigrant’s Story  Irving Berlin was born in a Russian village, but his family was not Russian. They were Jews who had settled in Russia. Irving and his brothers and sisters lived in a tiny hut with a dirt floor. On Saturday, Irving’s father would take the children to local synagogue, to worship and sing Jewish songs. Then one day, a group of Russian who did not like Jewish people rode into town and burned the village to the ground.

An Immigrant’s Story  Irving’s parents decided that it was not safe to remain in Russia. They traveled from village to village with only the items they could carry, and eventually they got on a boat that carried them to the United States.  There are many reasons why people come to the United States. Your task today is to learn about different people who have come to the United States.
