Why Common Core? Informational Tips for Parents SDOC

Here’s Why... Standards are the same for all students in states adopting the Common Core, which should provide a smoother transition for students moving in and out of our state. Students will be better prepared to compete in a global economy.

College and career readiness is the name of the game. Students who are “college and career ready” are independent learners and have mastered the skills to transition, without remediation, into postsecondary education, the workplace, or the military.

Why is that important? Right now, three-quarters of the fastest-growing occupations require more than a high school diploma. And yet, just over half of our citizens have that level of education. Only 25% of high school graduates can pass the entrance test to enter the military. On the average, 42% of students entering community college need remedial courses. 20% of students entering 4-year colleges need remedial courses.

Here’s Why... Standards will prepare our students for career success in the rapidly changing world of work. Standards place a strong emphasis on reading informational and technical texts to prepare students for the demands of college and the workplace.

What are we doing to prepare for Common Core? Professional development for teachers and administrators More rigorous curriculum Increased teacher collaboration for vertical and horizontal alignment Common Core Cohort to increase teacher expertise Informing all stakeholders about Common Core State Standards

Last Thoughts Common Core State Standards include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills. Common Core is all about science and mathematics through literacy. Common Core State Standards are evidence-based.
