Olivares combines reality and fiction to portray the hardships that African migrants endure hoping to escape violence and hunger. The story follows the long, grueling journey of Violeta, Buba and Mukela as they travel across Mali, Niger, Algeria, and Morocco with the aim of reaching Europe, “where nobody dies of hunger”. Through Carmelo’s eyes, viewers experience a moving reverse migration story that reveals why a 60-year-old chose to leave his family behind to seek his fortune as an illegal immigrant in the United States.
