Migration and Adoption Strategies for Faculty and Students

The key: “Helping faculty find rational paths to success” – Jay Fern Helping faculty see the reasons for change Giving faculty a true choice during the transition Providing a decision tool to help faculty decide when to make the change Working with faculty to establish system requirements Making a commitment to support teaching and research The key: “Helping faculty find rational paths to success” – Jay Fern Helping faculty see the reasons for change Giving faculty a true choice during the transition Providing a decision tool to help faculty decide when to make the change Working with faculty to establish system requirements Making a commitment to support teaching and research Faculty & Student Migration and Adoption

Faculty & Student Migration & Adoption: Decision Tool What current Oncourse tools do you consider important in the teaching or management of your courses? Announcements* Chat* Course Mail* Discussion forums Gradebook Creating groups My Filemanager* Redirect multiple courses or sections to a single course Schedule* Syllabus* Tests & Surveys Online survey

Faculty & Student Migration & Adoption: Decision Tool Since you've indicated Course Mail is important to your teaching: 1.How often do you communicate with an entire class through Course Mail? Never/Rarely Occasionally Regularly/Frequently 2.How often do you have students submit assignments through Course Mail? Never/Rarely Occasionally Regularly/Frequently 3.How often do you communicate with individual students using Course Mail? Never/Rarely Occasionally Regularly/Frequently 4.How often do you expect your students to communicate with each other via Course Mail? Never/Rarely Occasionally Regularly/Frequently

Faculty & Student Migration & Adoption: Faculty Feedback Generally positive feedback on: Basic reasons for change and IU’s involvement in the Sakai initiative The Oncourse CL interface, ability to navigate among sites and customize the tool list for each site Widespread availability of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editing

Faculty & Student Migration & Adoption: Faculty Feedback Very positive feedback on: Resources tool, drag and drop functionality Assignments tool Web Content tool Communication capabilities through distribution list and notification features

Faculty & Student Migration & Adoption: Gathering Faculty Requirements Requirements One-to-one communication –Teacher to student –Student to student –Give a grade, linked to the gradebook Discussion tool features –Designate read and unread messages –Give a grade, linked to the gradebook –View statistics about student participation Merge multiple sections and share information, resources, etc. across sections Create multiple grade books Create groups

Faculty & Student Migration & Adoption: Commitment to Teaching & Learning  IU has made the commitment to provide core communication functionality.  Assuming this objective is met with the version 2.5 release, the original Oncourse retirement will proceed on schedule.  In the unlikely event that the requirements should not be met by June 2006, the original Oncourse retirement will be delayed.

Faculty & Student Migration & Adoption: Student Experience Student Experience Students likely work in two environments Both environments list all fall classes New system provides new storage capabilities Online and face-to-face training available

Faculty & Student Migration & Adoption: Keeping Things in Perspective Perspective Faculty are not a captive audience Faculty readiness varies –Some ready to jump –Many will pick and choose –A few kicking and screaming Communication key Faculty leaders set example Transition allows faculty to plan their most important resource: their time

Faculty & Student Migration & Adoption: Centers for Teaching & Learning Role of the centers Faculty assistants Faculty advocates Pedagogical focus
