Naming Ionic Compounds

Ionic compounds have two components: Ionic compounds have two components: A cation (positive ion) and an anion (the negative ion). A cation (positive ion) and an anion (the negative ion). Ionic Compounds = Cation Anion Ionic Compounds = Cation Anion NaCl = Sodium Chloride NaCl = Sodium Chloride The cation is named first and always retains its elemental name. The cation is named first and always retains its elemental name.

Transition metals (found in the middle of the periodic table) always act as cations. Their charge must be identified by roman numeral because they can form more than one type of ion charge. Transition metals (found in the middle of the periodic table) always act as cations. Their charge must be identified by roman numeral because they can form more than one type of ion charge. *You can figure out the charge based on the cation ion charge! *You can figure out the charge based on the cation ion charge! Ex. Copper (II) Chloride = CuCl 2 Ex. Copper (II) Chloride = CuCl 2

For binary ionic compounds (where the cation and anion are made of only one atom each), the anion changes the ending to (–ide). For binary ionic compounds (where the cation and anion are made of only one atom each), the anion changes the ending to (–ide). Ox(ygen) + -ide = Oxide Ox(ygen) + -ide = Oxide Ex. CaO = Calcium Oxide Ex. CaO = Calcium Oxide

Use the given name for polyatomic ions. Use the given name for polyatomic ions. Ex. NaNO 3 = Sodium Nitrate Ex. NaNO 3 = Sodium Nitrate You must recognize the polyatomics by memorizing them! If there are 3 or more elements in the compound – look for a polyatomic!!! You must recognize the polyatomics by memorizing them! 6 Examples: BaCl 2 BaCl 2 Mg 3 (PO 4 ) 2 Mg 3 (PO 4 ) 2 K 2 S K 2 S PbCl 4 PbCl 4 FeO FeO Cu 2 O Cu 2 O PbCrO 4 PbCrO 4 Pb(CO 3 ) 2 Pb(CO 3 ) 2 Barium Chloride Barium Chloride Magnesium Phosphate Magnesium Phosphate Potassium Sulfide Potassium Sulfide Lead (IV) Chloride Lead (IV) Chloride Iron (II) Oxide Iron (II) Oxide Copper (I) Oxide Copper (I) Oxide Lead (II) Chromate Lead (II) Chromate Lead (IV) Carbonate Lead (IV) Carbonate
