3 “Check out before checking out” Do you check your receipt before you leave the store? Do you even check it after you get home? You should. A recent Consumer Reports survey found that approximately 6 percent of items were incorrectly priced at the scanner. Six percent seems like a low number in the grand scheme of things but according to “Good Morning America,” each year, consumers lose $1 billion to $2.5 billion because of scanner errors. So how do you guard against paying too much? First, you should watch the display screen for prices as they are scanned. If an error occurs, it is much easier to get it corrected right then and there. Tell the cashier. Then, ask about the store’s policy on pricing errors and request that the appropriate policy adjustment be made. Although some stores simply adjust the price, other stores may offer a bonus, such as giving the consumer one free item. If the store is having a sale, bring the store’s flier or newspaper ad with you. That saves time when the error is found. You won’t have to wait for someone to check the shelf. Even after leaving the checkout line, or the store for that matter, check your receipt. Identify and report errors to the store manager or customer service desk for a refund. I cannot tell you the number of times that I have gone to the service desk for errors. One store that shall remain nameless had charged me incorrectly on so many occasions that I talked to the manager and received a $25 gift card. Finally, if you notice that it’s a recurring problem, you can report the store to the attorney general’s office or the Federal Trade Commission. They most likely will not get involved in your individual case but they will investigate the store’s accuracy if they receive enough complaints. Denise Nape was born to shop and she shares all her tips, techniques and top-notch deals each week.

4 Summarize This article is mainly about the problems people encounter but do not notice when buying objects at any store. People normally do not notice when they are getting “scammed” by the scanners. In the article it states that most consumers lose up to 1 billion to 2.5 billion dollars a year on scanning errors.
