Catalyst 1. Provide one example of how a pollutant could affect life on land AND in water 2. What happens to the amount of pollution as you travel up a food chain? Why is this significant? 3. What is the difference between Cap and Trade and Command and Control?

Objectives By the end of today, all SWBAT… Describe the difference between conservation and preservation models Explain the advantages and disadvantages of the zoo model

The wild areas are disappearing And the animals are going extinct…

So, what do we do…? 2 lines of thinking…

Conserve = to use wisely Preserve = to keep safe, not to use

Conservation vs. Preservation ConservationPreservation GoalSave species DefinitionHumans protect species while benefitting from them “Hands on” Saving species in their original state “Hands off” Humans?YesNo AdvantagesHumans benefitHumans don’t impact animals DisadvantagesAnimals don’t live a “regular life” Humans don’t benefit Hard to get money to fund

Preservation Misuse of Resources Conservation

Conservation or Preservation? Conservation

Conservation or Preservation? No boats or human activity! Preservation

Conservation or Preservation? Conservation

Conservation or Preservation? NEITHER– misuse of resources

Big Question Is conservation or preservation a more effective tool to save our environment?

Preservation Misuse of Resources Conservation

Group Activity: 4 minutes  Read the prompt given  With your group, discuss where your scenario should go on the continuum of use of resources  Think: how much are humans involved?  One member from group will place on the continuum and defend your answer

Preservation Misuse of Resources Conservation

The Zoo Model: Good or Bad for our Animals?

Key Point #2  Zoos have many purposes  Provide entertainment  Conserve species  Educate people about animals

Pros (+)  Teach children to value animals  Keep animals safe  Breeding programs increase population sizes

Cons (-)  No zoo has saved a species from extinction  Poor treatment of animals  Take out of native environment  Animals develop odd behavior

Debate…FOR or AGAINST zoos  A California zoo decided to aid in conservation of the animal by adding two polar bears to its exhibit. Unfortunately, the climate is much different in California than the arctic tundra.  As a result, the polar bears react oddly to the temperature difference. The two bears swim laps in the small pool in their exhibit all day to keep cool. Additionally, the pool is not large enough for both polar bears at the same time.

Debate…FOR or AGAINST zoos  Unfortunately, some zoos in third-world countries do not have strict laws regarding animal care and do not properly care for their animals.  The Ragunan Zoo in Indonesia received many complaints that there was trash in many of the animal exhibits. Shortly after these complaints, an orangutan died from a plastic bag that got stuck in its digestive tract.

Debate…FOR or AGAINST zoos  Unfortunately, some zoos in third-world countries do not have strict laws regarding animal care and do not properly care for their animals.  The Ragunan Zoo in Indonesia received many complaints that there was trash in many of the animal exhibits. 23 Debate…FOR or AGAINST zoos  The Palm Beach Zoo spends thousands of dollars every year in breeding programs. Five jaguar cubs have been born at this zoo. Additionally, the jaguar is a solitary animal (lives alone). Therefore, populations of jaguars require atleast 3 acres of space (a large amount) to survive in the wild. However, the jaguar exhibit in the Palm Beach zoo places two jaguars in an area of ½ acre.

Exit Questions 1. What is the difference between conservation and preservation? 2. What is one argument FOR zoos as a conservation tool? 3. What is one argument AGAINST zoos as a conservation tool?
