2 What is Forensics all about? Learning to speak in public Making presentations that have fluency Increasing confidence in presentations Being part of a team Making lasting memories!

3 Practices Mondays 6 – 8 pm Wednesdays 3 – 5 pm Thursdays 6-8 pm Fridays (before a meet) 3- 6 pm Need to come at least one time a week. More is better. One to three events.

4 What to expect at practices Come ready to practice. Work with Mrs. Scaggs or event leader If event leader practice your piece or help others. You don’t come to work, I don’t count you here. The more you practice the better you will be!

6 Meet Schedule Oct. 31 Campbell/Harrison Co Swing Nov. 7 Boone/Calloway Swing Dec. 5 Grant Co Dec. 12 HHS Invitational (work) Jan. 9 Henry Clay Jan. 30 East Jessamine Feb. 6 Ryle (opt) Feb. 13 Regionals (Mandatory) (Feb. 20 snow date Regionals) March 12/13 STATE

7 What to expect at meets Register for meet on Monday before meet. All enter building together as team! Black suit pants/skirt, yellow shirt, suit coat, tie, dress shoes. Drop fee $20.00 per event. DON’T DROP! HHS meet in room for competition #’s, times, room assignments, etc. Captain speech Sign doors and begin competition 2 or 3 rounds (1.5 hours each) Eat when can – bring snacks? Finals (top 6) One clap rule/1 st place standing ovation.

8 Judges 6 to 1 ratio at each meet. HHS will average 7 to 11 judges per meet. 1 or 2 local meets 1 away meet All at HHS Invitational 12/12 Rent a judge $30.00 Dropped judge $50.00

9 Regionals Regional at Grant Co HS Feb. 13 (time TBA) Only 3 people per category can compete Make decision after Henry Clay Can sub people in! If you can’t compete at state –DON’T COMPETE AT REGIONALS!

10 STATE Friday March 12 (7:00 am) until Saturday March 13 (9:00 pm) Hotel stay in Bowling Green. Only qualifiers from Regionals attend (3 per category) You qualify for state at regionals – YOU MUST GO TO STATE!

11 Nationals Only top performers will be invited to try Limited/odd categories NCFL – top 5 or 6 NFL – top 2 Judges 2 to 1 ratio Weeklong stay Expense

12 Transportation For local meets students will provide own transportation to and from meet. For away meets we will be sharing transportation with Campbell Co HS Must have list of names and emergency phone numbers with me on bus.

13 HHS “Superpower of Words” Tournament Week long prep (12/7 through 12/12) Everyone works Major money maker! Need 30 to 60 judges Chairs (hospitality, concessions, trophies, judges) Parent donations

14 Financial Information $50.00 Activity fee Shirt fee (about $20.00) Food while at meets Hotel stay (State and Nationals) Donations for meet

15 Banquet (March 21, 2010) Dinner at member’s home Awards presented –Senior Awards –HHS Letters/Bars –Rookie of Year –Most Improved –MVP –Leadership

16 Lettering You have the opportunity to letter on the Forensics team. Criteria: –75% of meets –Final at meet or qualify for state –Assist the HMS team 15 % of year –Work at HHS meet (12/12)

17 Success from 2008-2009 4 th at Campbell County 3 rd at Boone County 7 th at Grant County 9 th at Henry Clay 3 rd at Harrison County 6 th at East Jessamine 3 rd place at Regionals! 16 out of 18 members qualified for state 22 events made it to state 8 events went to semi-finals 4 events went to finals 12 th place in the state! Blyton Book Award recipient – Abby Middleton 2 alternates at NCFL qualifier

18 Success From 2008-2009 5 th at Campbell Co- 5 th at Boone Co 6 th at Calloway Co- 5 th at Harrison Co 4 th at Grant Co- 4 th at Henry Clay 3 rd in Region Madison McGhee Regional Champ – OO Emily Scaggs Regional Runner Up - DI 18 people advanced to state (out of 20) 27 events made it to state 9 events went to semi-finals at state 2 events finaled at state (Emily Scaggs – 3 rd in DI and Stephanie Leonard – 6 th in Storytelling) 14 th place at state – 65 Sweepstakes points 8 th out of 9 teams in AAA Division Blyton Book Award – Emily Scaggs 3 students qualified for NCFL Emily Scaggs Octofinalist (top 36) at NCFL in Albany, NY
