3. First Thing’s First How do you get better at a sport? Let’s start with the first one: – Response to Essay Topic: The writer responds effectively to the writing task (prompt, question, topic, etc.). The writer demonstrates that he or she can present the ideas of the author(s) cogently and develop his or her own ideas in response. In other words, did you address all parts of the prompt and did you explain your OWN ideas?

First Thing’s First And now the second: – Understanding and Use of Text: The writer provides the reader a clear and accurate understanding of the text and effectively uses the ideas in the text to develop the writer’s response. In other words, did you show that you understood the ideas in the text and did you use those ideas to talk about your own?
