Perú: In context

High momentum for “classic” deforestation and land use change/cover assessment. National forest inventory expanding but needs further input. Need to include other key players from other Ministries and government entities. Need to begin capacity building in “new” technology & tools. Thinking about capacity building efforts and needs, where do you think your country is in terms of addressing forest change, forest carbon stocks?

What are the approaches from international cooperation that you have find more useful for advancing the developing of your country MRV system? Exchange of experiences. Objective based workshops. Product development with partners.

What are the current programs from international cooperation in your country that aim to develop capacity in the implementation of your MRV system? University of Maryland – expertise in satellite based forest measurement. Conservation International – workshops. JAXA – workshops and images. FAO – workshops. KFW – financing. WWF – regional capacity building. USFS – national forest inventory. Carnegie Institute of Science – remote sensing products. USAID, SilvaCarbon, Boston University, OTCA

Can you identify the most immediate needs on capacity building for forest monitoring? Forest Degradation, Early Alert, LiDAR. Increase the pool of specialists.

How do you envision international cooperation to assistance in the short term 1 – 2 years and in the long term 5 years from now? Short Term: 1. Further exchange of experiences. 2. Continue cooperation in technical issues. 3. Development of new approaches. Long Term: Undergraduate, graduate, and postdoc training.
