2 MONDAY - PREVIEW SENTENCES Copy the words onto your own paper. Use context clues to determine part of speech and definition for each word. 1.“All the world is a stage” is a famous metaphor written by Shakespeare. 2.Students who enjoy athletics must be willing to sacrifice their free time to practice. 3.It is a good idea to have a strategy when taking a test so that you aren’t lost. 4.I have decided to boycott companies that pollute the earth because I don’t want to give them money to do harm. 5.It took seven people to maneuver the large tiger out of its small cage. 3 VOCABULARY – WEEK 4 1.metaphor – (noun) – a figure of speech comparing two unlike things and without using the words “like” or “as”. Etymology: Middle French “All the world is a stage” is a famous metaphor written by Shakespeare.

4 VOCABULARY – WEEK 4 2.sacrifice – (verb) – to give something up for the sake of something else sacrifice – (noun) – a person, animal, or thing given up for the sake of something else Etymology: Old French Verb: Students who enjoy athletics must be willing to sacrifice their free time to practice. Noun: The war required everyone to make sacrifices. FREE TIME

5 VOCABULARY – WEEK 4 3.strategy – (noun) – a careful plan or method Etymology: Greek It is a good idea to have a strategy when taking a test.

6 VOCABULARY – WEEK 4 4.boycott – (verb) – refusal to buy from or deal with a person, business, or nation Etymology: English (named after Charles C. Boycott (1832-97), an English estate manager in Ireland, against whom this tactic was used in 1880. I have decided to boycott companies that pollute the earth.

7 VOCABULARY – WEEK 4 5.maneuver – (verb) – to manage into or out of a position or condition using skill maneuver – (noun) – a planned movement for a specific purpose Etymology: Middle French Verb: It took seven people to maneuver the large tiger out of its small cage. Noun: The general planned a maneuver that he hoped would outsmart the enemy.

8 CONNECTION Connections help us learn vocabulary words! Illustrate TWO vocabulary words and write a caption under the illustration. Good illustrations are NOT stick figures. Think of something beyond stick figures with speech bubbles I am a BAD example of an illustration for a vocab word. Can you guess what vocab word from week 1 this represents??

9 1. 2. Vocab – 20 minutes Create a Frayer model for the 3 words that you didn’t illustrate.

10 WEEK 3 VOCAB QUIZ Write a paragraph using all 5 words. You do not have to use the words in any particular order. 1.metaphor 2.sacrifice 3.Strategy 4.boycott 5.maneuver Each word must be underlined and spelled correctly. The meaning of the word must be clear in the context of the sentence(s) around the word. Don’t change the part of speech of the word by adding suffixes. You may conjugate verbs, however. If our definition included more than one part of speech (noun or verb, for example), then you may choose either for your paragraph.
