Secure Copy Overview Presentation

Today’s Networks More companies are building their networks around Microsoft Windows than ever before. According to Microsoft, “The average system uptime of Windows 2000 Professional was over 50 times that of Windows 98 and 17 times that of Windows NT Workstation 4.0.” Networks built on Windows NT/2000/2003 are traditionally less expensive to build and operate than other networks, and thus make good business sense. But as a network grows in size, administering it becomes much more difficult. That’s where Small Wonders Software can help…

While it may be easy to set permissions on a particular directory, how easy is it to move data or consolidate servers? Is it possible to copy data without losing the Security? The answer is “No.” At least without a product like Secure Copy. Secure Copy allows an administrator to copy files and directories on NTFS partitions while keeping the security intact, creating shares, and migrating local groups. Managing Your Network

The dilemma of server consolidation using native Windows tools: Enterprises looking to significantly reduce their total cost of ownership can do so by consolidating their servers. Administrators transfer data from one server to another when upgrading, repartitioning and/or retiring servers, as well as during Windows 2000 deployment.

The Challenge Moving large amounts of data is compounded with the dilemma of the permissions not being copied along with the files. Windows removes NTFS security on folders and files if they are copied between servers or even partitions and drives on the same server. Windows also removes associated file shares when data is moved or copied. Even if security could be maintained between servers, the use of local groups and users would create a condition that unresolved SIDs would occur on the data.

The Solution Secure Copy solves this problem by allowing administrators to transfer large amounts of data along with their permissions. The end result? Server consolidation made easy. Time and money saved.

Secure Copy Overview Secure Copy permits seamless migration Allows administrators to copy files and directories on NTFS partitions while: Keeping the security intact. Creating shares, and migrating local groups. Easy to use GUI Keeps you updated on copy progress. Displays any errors that may occur. Set job copy options. Schedule regular backups.

Distinguishing Features Retain security while you copy - If you use Windows NT Explorer or other copy commands to copy files, the file permissions are not copied with the file. However, with Secure Copy, you can move the files along with their permissions. Create shares while copying - Migrate existing shares on the source server to the destination server or move them within a server. As Secure Copy copies each folder, it first checks to see if that folder is shared. If so, Secure Copy will create the share on the destination server and copy the permissions to the share based on easily customizable criteria. This outstanding feature alone makes Secure Copy worth the investment.

Distinguishing Features Migrate local groups while copying – Creates local group on the destination server, if the group has permissions on the source server. Groups and users can also be migrated to Active Directory or an NT 4.0 Domain. If the local group exist on the destination server you can: Add a prefix. Add a suffix. Or just skip it all together. If you use “Scopy.exe” (from the NT resource kit), Every local group would appear as “Account Unknown” in the destination file’s permissions list.

Distinguishing Features Full Command Line Support - Secure Copy is fully functional directly from the command line. Differential Copying – Only copy files that have changed in the source server. Save Multiple Jobs. Schedule jobs to run – Run the jobs after hours. Secure Copy uses the Windows Task Scheduler service for a familiar and reliable interface.

Setting up a Job: Screen Shot Key Features Easily select, edit and remove source and target locations. Create new jobs or save the current one. Test or Run the job in a live environment. Create a source folder on the target to place copied data. Schedule the current job. Quickly see all available job options.

Managing a Saved Job: Screen Shot Key Features Enable and disable saved jobs. Modify a saved job. Schedule a saved job. Test a saved job. Run a saved job. Create or delete a job.

General Copy Options: Screen Shot Key Features Copy all files or only changed ones. Synchronize source and target. Copy files even if you do not have access to them. Copy data without security. Generate log files to track progress.

Advanced Options: Screen Shot Key Features Reset Last Accessed Date on source files. Synchronize last accessed and created dates. Always copy permissions even on skipped files. Clear archive bit on source. Set password for migrated user accounts.

Compression Options: Screen Shot Key Features Choose how files are compressed. Never compress target files. Always compress target files files. Compress target files only if the source is compressed.

Migrate File Shares: Screen Shot Key Features Migrate files shares to destination server or move shares on the same server. Choose options for duplicate shares. Skip, overwrite, prompt, add a prefix or suffix. Choose resource group to create or add to when using clusters.

Migrate Local Groups: Screen Shot Key Features Migrate local groups and users to destination server, NT 4.0 Domains or Active Directory Choose options for duplicate groups and users. Handle BUILTIN groups effectively. Choose to add a prefix or a suffix. Choose to migrate groups, users or both.

Filter Files: Screen Shot Key Features Apply filters to files and folders. Filter to include or exclude file extensions. Exclude folders by name. Keep unwanted files and folders from being migrated.

What People are Saying "Some software companies make claims but do not live up to them, Small Wonders Software does. I like using Secure Copy. Initially, we planned to use it to transfer data from a server to workstations, but it worked so well that we realized we could make use of it when we replaced servers." Joel Rabe Network Engineer Valmont Industries "We love your product, Secure Copy. It is unmatched for moving data from server to server. It works like a charm, plain and simple, straight to the point." Adi Ljubovic Entex IT Service, Siemens Company

More Quotes "I just used Secure Copy over the weekend to copy data to a new server we installed and it worked great! The time I saved by using your product was invaluable. One of the features I like most about Secure Copy is the ability to keep shares and user permissions intact while transferring data. Since I didn't have to go in and re-assign user rights or modify security, I was able to finish the job faster and more efficiently. I really liked that!" Brad Golden Director of IT Konover Property Trust "We found that Secure Copy was easy to use, we did not consider using any other product. When it works you stay with it!" Sven Ullstad Consultant Consafe Infotech

More Quotes "I recently purchased Secure Copy to move 15 gigabytes of user and project data between 2 servers and the results were fantastic! Secure Copy saved me hours of time. I don't think I could have tackled the assignment so easily without it. Now I'm going to use Secure Copy to perform backups between two pairs of servers without taking them off-line. If one of the servers fails, I can just switch the alias in the DNS table. Now, the users can continue working with only a small interruption. In the past we were used to losing two days of production. Many thanks for your great product!" Andrew Chapple IS Regional Services "Secure Copy has proven to be a great time saver. I moved close to 50,000 files in 6700+ directories this morning across raid arrays on one of my servers and it did it in a little over an hour and a half while re-creating shares and security settings - it would have taken me weeks to recreate all that manually! For the time that I saved with just this one use of it, the money that we spent on it has more than paid for itself many times over." Jim Danvers Network Administrator The Gunlocke Company
