2 Oracle is our primary relational database (best-of-breed) Unlimited campus license (AIM, University Financials, and Human Resources, and dozens of other OIT and department applications) Changes in February 2013 Revised Oracle license Acquired Exadata (to simplify our environment and improve reliability and performance) Beginning to test Exadata

3 Use Oracle when possible Use SQL Server when required by a Windows application (we have 100’s of SQL Server instances) Avoid MySQL (recent growth – Learning Suite and Alfresco)

4 5 years – IBM, Oracle, Microsoft dominate market (we’re not interested in IBM) 10 years – PeopleSoft for ERP (for which Oracle is the best solution) Oracle remains best for premium applications SQL Server expands (as Windows applications increase) MySQL expands (as our use of Open Source software grows)

5 Use Oracle when possible Use SQL Server when required by a Windows application Use MySQL when required by an Open Source software package

6 Actions Migrate to Exadata to improve Oracle reliability, capacity, performance Explore hosting services for Windows applications Address Microsoft licensing issues Move applications (like Learning Suite) from MySQL to Oracle where possible Improve DBA support for MySQL
