What are the Causes, Effects and Responses to Flooding in Bangladesh. Assessment Task: You are a photo editor for a news organization who is putting together a presentation on the causes, effects and responses to flooding in Bangladesh. You will be concentrating on one particular flood event in 1998. There SHOULD be more than one photo for each section. Each photo has to have a caption that describes and explains the relevance of the photo. I.e. it should not be – here is a picture of flat land, it should be: “Bangladesh in mainly low lying flat land with …% being less than …. Meters above sea level. This means when rivers flood it covers a large area of land. Source: www.mrpiersiscoolandhisphotosaregreat.com

What are the Physical Causes of Flooding

What are the Human Causes of Flooding

Case Study 1998 Floods On the next few pages add the effects of the flood. You should look at the primary effects (those that happen straight away) and the secondary effects (those that may happen over the next few days and months)

Responses to Flooding Here you will look at the immediate and longer term responses of the government and other organizations Think about medical help, food help in the first instance and some of the longer term ways people could respond to regular flooding.

Long Term Responses to flooding Here you need to look at different responses such as flood prevention schemes, shelters and early warning systems.

Facts 80% of land is 6meters off the ground, so when it floods the water can cover more ground faster It is one of the most populated countries in the world It has been formed by silt deposited by rivers from the Himalaya over the years

Monsoon The people of Bangladesh rely on the monsoon season for their rice crop. Between 1800m m and 2600mmof rain fall a year. It mostly falls during May to September.

The causes of Flooding Human Physical Expanding cities Growing population Deforestation Melting snow Monsoon Many rivers and tributaries Cities are built on concrete and when it rains the water has nowhere to go so it sits on top of the concrete flooding the streets.

The effects of the flood Primary Secondary Dead cattle Dead rice crop Destroyed homes Water born disease More than 2000 people died from drowning Snake bites More fish After the monsoon of 1998 the population of fish was increasing and people have taken on fishing as a new opportunity.

Short term response 100,000 families were provided with 30kg rice, 5 kg lentils or with chira and gur. 100,000 sarees were distributed 50,000 families were provided with plastic water tanks

Long-term response This is a shelter I built on Google sketch up. The water bit is the flooded area, the first floor is supplies and the second floor is the shelter for the people. The inside is made out of wood and the outside is made out of brick. The long square piece that is going down the middle is a door and inside of that door is a ladder and it is made out of steel. There is a computer, a phone and on the roof there is a wireless signal
