5 The Destruction of Pompeii In 49 CE Mount Vesuvius erupted. It destroyed the small city of Pompeii in southern Italy. Over 2,000 people were killed by the smoke and burning lava. It also “preserved” many of the buildings, paintings and bodies for future generations.

7 Roman Portraits Romans painted PORTRAITS of individual people, not just Ideal Beauty like the Greeks did. They used shading for a 3-Dimensional effect

8 ROMAN ARCHITECTURE The Coliseum

9 The Coliseum in Rome was built in 8 AD and held 50,000 people. It could be flooded with water for staged naval battles.

10 Roman Mosaics The Romans were noted for their MOSIACS. Mosaics are pictures made of small pieces of stone or colored glass. These small pieces are called TESSERAE. Today we often see mosaics made of tiles in homes or restaurants.

12 Cave Canem was Latin for Beware of Dog This mosaic was found at the entry of a house in Pompeii.
