1 Take notes on the following information and title it “Parts of Speech”: Part of speech refers to the way a word can be used or the type of word that a particular word is. Some parts of speech:  Noun= a person, place, thing or idea. A noun can be made plural (usually by adding an “s” to the end.)  Example : Due to all of our crazy antics last night, I have much languor today.  Adjective = a type of word that describe a noun.  Example : I felt distraught at the girl’s lascivious behavior.  Verb = an action word. Verb tenses can be changed to be past, present or future tense.  Example: She averted her eyes from her mother because she did not want to be chastened.  Adverb = A type of word that describes a verb. Usually (but not always), they end in “-ly”  Example: She turned in her work tacitly; she walked contritely to the front of the room, feeling badly about not having studied the night before.

2 Warm-up: Use your vocabulary list to determine which words go in which blanks (only words from Chapters 6-7): 1. If Richard had decided against baptism, it would’ve been seen as _________, since the entire church would see his refusal as unacceptable. 2. As Granny washed Richard, she found him extremely offensive and ________ when he uttered the squalid statement: “kiss back there when you’re done.” 3. Richard tried to _________ his laughter from coming out when his white employer asked him bluntly if he stole. 4. After being asked this question, Richard felt ___________ that whites could view blacks as so simple-minded. 5. Richard is not able to __________ his thoughts about his lack of belief in God to Granny very well, since when he tries, she thinks he says something completely different. 6. To Richard, activities such as praying and going to church are mere __________; he finds the reasons for these obscure. 7. 3  Turn in homework from yesterday.  Bring silent reading book Friday.  Monday= last day for October make-up work.  Homework: Read until the end of Chapter 7.  Possible quiz on tomorrow!  You should have at least three conflict journals DONE by the end of the week!!!

4 Literary Response and Analysis 3.3 Analyze interactions between main and subordinate characters in a literary text (e.g., internal and external conflicts, motivations, relationships, influences) and explain the way those interactions affect the plot.

5 Let’s review conflict journals by looking at page 155. 2 nd to last paragraph.

6  As we continue reading, take note of Wright’s style…  Also, pay attention to the conflicts that Wright writes about.
