Measuring Temperature using the Metric System Alice L. Comisky

The instrument used for measuring temperature in the metric system is the Celsius thermometer. It measures the freezing point of water at 0 o C and the boiling point of water at 100 o C The unit of measure for temperature is the degree celsius.

Take the time to learn these four benchmark temperatures. They will give you reference points you can use to determine if a temperature is realistic. For example which of the following temperatures is realistic for a hot summer day. 85 0 C or 30 0 C _

To read a thermometer you must first determine the size of the smallest division. For example, on this thermometer the main divisions are marked in tens. Each of these main divisions is divided into five smaller parts. 10 divided by 5 equals 2. Each of the small divisions on this thermometer equal 2 o C What temperature is shown on this thermometer? Reading a Thermometer 36 0 C

What temperature is shown on this thermometer? On this thermometer the main divisions are marked in twenties. Each of these main divisions is divided into five smaller parts. 20 divided by 5 equals 4. Each of the small divisions on this thermometer equals _______ 92 0 C 4 o C

On this thermometer the main divisions are marked in fives. Each of these main divisions is divided into ten smaller parts. 5 divided by 10 equals 0.5 Each of the small divisions on this thermometer equal _______. What temperature is shown on this thermometer? 0.5 0 C 18 0 C

On this thermometer the main divisions are marked in tens. Each of these main divisions is divided into ten smaller parts. 10 divided by 10 equals 1. Each of the small divisions on this thermometer equal ___________. What temperature is shown on this thermometer? 1 0 C 32 0 C

On this thermometer the main divisions are marked in tens. Each of these main divisions is divided into five smaller parts. 10 divided by 5 equals 2. Each of the small divisions on this thermometer equal ___________. What temperature is shown on this thermometer? 2oC2oC 28 0 C

How many degrees celcius does each interval represent? What temperature is shown on this thermometer? 10C10C 43 0 C

Using a Thermometer 1. Do not shake down the thermometer before using. 2. To avoid breakage, it is best to hold the top of the thermometer while using. 3. When the liquid in the thermometer is no longer moving, you can read the temperature of the substance.

To correctly find the temperature of a liquid, make sure the thermometer is not touching the bottom of the container. The bulb of the celsius thermometer needs to be surrounded by the substance in order to record the correct temperature.

Temperature Review  What is the unit of measure for temperature in the metric system?  What instrument is used to measure temperature?  What is normal body temperature?  Why do you need to make sure the thermometer is suspended in the liquid? degree celsius celsuis thermometer 37 0 C To get an accurate temperature the bulb of the thermometer needs to be surrounded by the liquid.

Temperature Review  What is comfortable room temperature on the celsius thermometer  How many degrees celcius does each of the small intervals on thermometer A represent?  What temperature is shown on thermometer B? between 20 0 C and 22 0 C 40C40C 36 0 C A B

Remember that the temperature of substances are not changing as you move between a Celcius thermometer and a Fahrenheit thermometer. It’s just that each of these thermometers uses different numbers to identify the freezing temperature of water and the boiling temperature of water. This creates a different number scale on each of the thermometer. Alice l. Comisky
