Presentation on theme: "Footnotes Use end notes, not footnotes."— Presentation transcript:

1 Footnotes Use end notes, not footnotes.
Use Arabic, not Roman, numerals. Put the number after quotation marks. If the same source is used twice in sequence, use ibid. If it is from the same source and a different page, use ibid., page#. Remember the period. Ibid. is an abbreviation of ibidem. If the source is used a second time later in the paper, use an abbreviated form.

2 Tips Double space the paper.
Write out numbers less than or equal to 100. Numbers larger than 1,000 have commas Dates are October 16, 2005, not October 16th. Very large numbers can be 1.8 million. Decades can be 1820s. Times are 7:00 A.M. and not 7 A.M. in the morning.

3 More Tips Use a comma after every element in a series. Tom, Dick, and Harry. Dashes are two dashes, no spaces. I said—or at least I thought I said . . . Titles are not capitalized unless they immediately precede a proper name except King and Pope (but not President.) When underlining, the is usually not part of the name. Thus the New York Times and not The New York Times.

4 More Tips Periods and commas go inside quotation marks. Reference numbers go outside. Ellipses indicate omission of a word or phrase. If it is within a sentence, use three spaced dots (Men make passes at girls who wear glasses.) If it follows a sentence, use four spaced dots since the first one is a period like this. Block quotes are for direct quotes of three sentences or more, are indented four spaces from the left, and are single spaced.

5 And Finally Use the spell checker and grammar checker.
Proof read, and then proof read again, and then proof read some more.
