1 Dunblane Primary School The Daily Mile “The daily mile can do more for the health of children than any healthcare system.” Maureen Bisognano Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

2 The Impact It is simple It is inclusive of all children It is free, no CPD!! Improves focus The children thrive on being outdoors – experiencing the fresh air, the weather, the sights and the sounds It’s non-competitive, everyone succeeds Relationships, sociable The children are very positive about it and proud of it

3 Impact cont…. The children are more resilient It is safe It’s quick, 15mins turn around. Pupils are fitter and get more out of PE lessons. Pupils are aware of how the daily mile helps then to stay physically and mentally well. It’s an afternoon break with a purpose. It settles some children. 3

4 You can make curriculum links, but not always! Do personal marathons. Daily stats Run a river, across a continent, complete the Tour de France Create class rules Talk about the emotional and physical benefits. Data Handling Vocabulary associated with running – (pace, rhythm, co-ordination, confidence, perseverance, relaxation…) Etc……. 4

5 5 Parents are grateful that the school keeps their children fit Children are sleeping better Children are eating better Children talk about their health at home Parents from two classes contacted us to say that they were not doing the Daily Mile regularly enough Parental feedback The Evidence -

6 6 The children love being outside Cross-curricular learning benefits – e.g. Maths / Topic work It supports the rhythm of the classroom and the day The children’s confidence has increased Children are focussed and ready to learn when they come back into the classroom Relationships The Staff

7 7 “The reason I like doing the daily mile is it wakes you up and gets you ready to learn”. Millie “You get fitter and your legs get stronger. You get lots of fresh air” Amy “It makes you physically and mentally stimulated and keeps you healthy and fitter and it’s really fun”. Aqib I like the daily mile as after lunch it gets all stuffy and we get tired so we do the daily mile and then we are nice and fresh” Joel The Pupils

8 What it will look like at Dunblane Primary School - New walking tracks 3 out of 5 days all pupils throughout the school will walk on the track. We want the staff and pupils to own the walking track. Include it in your weekly plan. Pupils should try to go out in all weather. It is very slick, 15 minute turn around. The number of laps can be differentiated for year groups, classes. Term 1 p7’s might want to go out with p1 buddies. No need to get changed or warm up or cool down Parent mail will be send to parents so pupils come prepared. Class Challenge – What will we call it?? All ideas by Friday 28 th August.
