Skin and its derivatives (sweat and oil glands, hair and nails) are part of which system? INTEGUMENTARY

Skin Color Determined by the pigment, Melanin More melanin = darker skin Freckles and Moles = areas of concentrated melanin

Tanning Exposure to sunlight causes the skin to produce more melanin Melanin helps protect against UV rays

Skin color is also influenced by emotional stimuli and can signal certain diseases Erythema = reddened skin  embarrassment, fever, inflammation Blanching = pale  stress (fear), decreased blood flow to area

Skin color is also influenced by emotional stimuli and can signal certain diseases Jaundice = yellow  signifies a liver disorder Bruises = black and blue  blood clot in tissue (injury)

Vitiligo Melanocytes die and stop producing melanin bleaching color on the skin

Skin Functions Your skins acts as a barrier to protect your inner organs. Against what?? Take 60 seconds and write down as many things as you can think of

5 types of Damage Mechanical Chemical Bacterial Ultraviolet (UV) Thermal Work with your group to match how your skin protects your inner organs from these types of damages. When you are finished, write them in your notes!

5 types of damage and how your skin works to protect it Mechanical damage = Skin acts as a physical barrier: keratin toughens cells and pressure receptors alert nervous system to possible damage UV radiation = Melanin offers protection from UV damage Chemical damage = Has relatively impermeable keratinized cells, which does not allow harmful things to enter the skin Bacterial damage = Skin releases sweat, which contains acid to kill unwanted organisms. White blood cells ingest foreign substances, which prevents them from going deeper into the body Thermal damage = Contains heat/cold/pain receptors
